{"id":392,"date":"2017-05-14T18:03:46","date_gmt":"2017-05-14T18:03:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/batboyhelps.com\/blog\/?p=392"},"modified":"2020-08-28T10:12:26","modified_gmt":"2020-08-28T14:12:26","slug":"negron-derek-jeters-bronx-tale-with-the-yankees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theraynegronstory.com\/columns\/negron-derek-jeters-bronx-tale-with-the-yankees\/","title":{"rendered":"Negron: Derek Jeter\u2019s Bronx Tale With The Yankees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am proud to say, in 1969, I attended Mickey Mantle Day. \u00a0It was incredible to say the least. \u00a0Joe DiMaggio was there with many others. \u00a0That day Mantle had his number retired and a plaque placed in centerfield. \u00a0He in turn presented DiMaggio with a plaque that Mantle said would have to hang a little higher than his.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Derek Jeter goes into monument park and his number is retired.<\/p>\n<p>In 1996, George Steinbrenner assigned me the duty of mentoring Jeter, because he was a rookie. \u00a0We were inseparable that season. He even ate spaghetti at my home with my kids who loved him. After the World Series, he gave me a baseball that said, \u201cThank you for your help this season, I couldn\u2019t have done it without you.\u201d \u00a0Even though he could have made it without me, I thought the gesture was very nice. \u00a0The following season he asked me why we hadn\u2019t hung out that much and I told him, \u201cBecause you don\u2019t need me anymore. \u00a0You are more mature than most rookies I have seen come up.\u201d \u00a0I could talk about Jeter all day but that would be called a book! \u00a0To say that I am close to Jeter would be a lie, however I am close enough to say that like Bobby Murcer and Thurman Munson, Derek Jeter did it right and I am glad that the fans appreciate him the way that they do.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-393\" src=\"http:\/\/batboyhelps.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_8704-e1494793339138-286x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theraynegronstory.com\/columns\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_8704-e1494793339138-286x300.png 286w, https:\/\/theraynegronstory.com\/columns\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_8704-e1494793339138.png 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 286px) 100vw, 286px\" \/>I asked some of my celebrity friends to give me a quote or two about their feelings for Jeter. \u00a0I hope you enjoy them.<\/p>\n<p>JETER\u2019S BRONX TALE<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I want to wish Derek Jeter congratulations on a great career.
